Is E-Sports Really Sport?

Updated: Mar 10, 2020

Esports is a growing trend in which people engage with untraditional sports and watch gaming as a form of electronic sports which has the same concept of traditional sports in which two or more teams or opponents verse each other and try to beat or win against their opponent.

Esports is growing tremendously in todays society as a result of the rise of technological advances as well as the latest released video games which are constantly evolving, being updated and being released to the public in which professional gamers take the most advantage of by playing and streaming or recording their gameplay often with live commentary in which viewers or subscribers watch and follow.

Below is a graph showing the esports viewership growth from having 134mil viewers in 2012 to 395mil in 2018.

Alongside individual professional esports gamers competing against each other now there are teams which play video games professionally in tournament or competition styled games against other esports teams to determine who the best team is. Similar to traditional sports in which teams compete to determine who is the superior or better team by winning matches and moving up divisions and versing harder competition in some cases.

Below is a recent trailer of one of the largest esports competitive games tournaments Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) in which the best teams in the world gather in Berlin to compete for the title and accompanied prize money.

Esports has seemingly been seen as a joke or for children but this notion has been shaken since its popular rise since the first video game tournament in 1972 held in California.

Becoming an elite esports professional gamer requires very different skills to traditional sports played with a ball or stick or any other and rather uses a controller or keyboard which still requires a whole lot of skill similar to a professional sports person like Messi one of the most well renowned sports people of this generation.

Some of the biggest and top esports games of 2020 include:

- Fortnite

- Counter Strike: Global Offensive

- League of Legends

- Dota 2

- Call of Duty

- Overwatch

If you are unaware of these games your kids have definitely heard about them or even play them.

To find out more about these gaming titles and how many active users they have as well as their money generated and awarded to competitors and winners from cash prizes follow this link:

Because esports are steadily growing in popularity organisations, events and sponsors are taking advantage of these potential revenue streams by partnering with esports tournaments, competitions and sponsoring esports athletes.

The esports buzz is increasingly rising with popularity as it gains even more traction with more competitions, events, competitors and fans as more video games are released.
