Is Technology Healthy for Our Favourite Sports?

Updated: Mar 11, 2020

My name is Robbie Amler and welcome to my blog. I have grown up playing a vast array of sports in my lifetime and have since progressed to earn a bachelors degree in sports management. Since receiving my bachelors degree I have gone on to continue to follow my passion for sports and have become a professional sports commentator covering a multitude of sports. I have been a sports commentator for 10 years.

By being around sport for most my life I have seen the changes occur before me and the impacts of technology in how we watch and enjoy our favourite sports but most importantly how the traditional sports are being played in our current society.

Video Assistant Referee (VAR), goal line technology, instant video replays, assistant referees watching on a computer screen in another room were all foreign terms or ideas when I was first introduced to watching and participating in sports.

TV's were hardly around but when they first made a breakthrough and gained traction becoming a mainstream staple in most peoples houses, sports also had to adapt to be more TV friendly for those TV viewers that would rather watch from the comfort of their couch than follow their favourite teams around with these trips sometimes being unappealing due to their travel and ticket costs incurred.

These technological advancements have made it easier to gain access and closely follow and keep up to date with our favourite sports, teams and athletes. In doing so sports have also changed. Some say the flow of sports has been slowed down due to more stoppages in play being caused due to VAR reviews and instant on field replays being time consuming in confirming whether a noteworthy incident has occurred and in some cases play may need to be called back to a certain point and then resumed.

To see when VAR is implemented in football according to FIFA regulations and the full process follow this link:

Technology in sports has reduced the occurrence rate of human error from referees as there are essentially multiple assistant referees that are able to communicate through earpiece devices and convey their thoughts to the on field referee to make the final decision.

Although technological advancements have affected the way we watch and enjoy sports they have been viewed as unnatural and annoying. Furthermore, it has ultimately made the final outcome of the matches and competitions fairer due to the lack of human error in referees and interference in play.
